Packing Tips
Packing your items correctly is key to keeping them safe and secure while in storage. Here are some simple tips to help:
Use Sturdy Boxes
Pack your belongings into strong boxes, filling them completely without overloading. Avoid bulging boxes as they can collapse or tip over.
Keep Heavy Items Manageable
Place heavy items such as books or tools in smaller boxes. This makes them easier to lift and prevents damage to the boxes.
Label Everything Clearly
Mark each box with its contents and the room it belongs to. This makes unpacking quicker and helps you find items when you need them.
Invest in Quality Packing Supplies
Use strong boxes, packing tape, and protective covers for furniture, mattresses, and sofas. Good materials keep your items safe during storage.
Consider Insurance Options
Check with your home or business insurer about storage insurance for extra peace of mind while your belongings are with us.
A little thought before you pack your unit can save time and hassle later. Here are some smart ways to set up your storage:
Start with the Big Stuff
Place heavy furniture and bulky items at the back, stacking lighter and more fragile pieces on top or in front.
Think About Access
Store things you’ll need often near the front, and leave a clear path so you can reach items without unpacking the whole unit.
Make Use of Vertical Space
Adding shelves is a great way to maximise your unit, keep things tidy, and protect fragile items. Ask us about shelving options to suit your space.
Some belongings need a little extra attention when going into storage. Here are a few tips to help protect your more valuable or delicate items:
Electronics
Whenever possible, use the original packaging. If not, wrap securely in bubble wrap and store upright. Remove all batteries to avoid leaks.
Appliances
Fridges and freezers should be defrosted, cleaned, and dried before storage. Leave the doors slightly open to prevent mould or odours.
Mirrors, Artwork & Frames
Wrap in protective material and always store standing on their edge to reduce the risk of breakage.
Fragile Kitchenware
Individually wrap glassware, dishes, and china in packing paper. Layer cartons carefully, label them clearly, and avoid stacking heavy items on top.
Furniture
Clean and dry thoroughly, then cover with protective materials. Wooden pieces benefit from a light polish and extra protection such as corrugated cardboard.
Valuables
For delicate silverware, china, or collectibles, use acid-free tissue paper and mark the boxes so they’re handled with care.
Outdoor Equipment & Machinery
Drain all fuel and oil before storing lawn mowers, tools, or machinery. Gas bottles must be emptied completely for safety.
